It's still sunny out, but colder. Somehow it sucks some joy from fall; I think if it's going to be cold and miserable, you might as well get it over with. Not so, instead a couple weeks of cold sun visit us every year around this time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not wishing it away, but I get the feeling nature is stringing me along.
My car has been more frustrating than not since I bought it. Granted, this is typical but I do like to think I'm the exception to every unpleasant rule. When I feel good about it I'm going to take a picture of her while the weather is still attractive. Nothing makes a car look lousy like a dark day. What brings this up is the fact that the battery, for whatever reason, does not appreciate being drained on a regular basis and thus refuses to charge fully. Dratted battery! Stranded me for an hour today! Poor JoshA had to rescue me because my family was not reachable. Hopefully a good charging will insert some sense into this thing.
School is hard, and my friends aren't making it easier. Clifton stole my entire weekend with his constant screwups. First his server was here for a week giving me hell (turns out Cliffy-boy bent a pin on his SCSI cable), then he tried to install Linux-Mandrake 9 without attending Linux Clue 101, and destroyed 80GB of hard drive data. I'd feel sorry for him, except I had to bail him out both times. Besides, he lost minimal critical data so that at least could've been MUCH worse. But we spent 7 hours on Sunday bringing his system back to a usable state. He owes me, and I won't forget it. This shit is killing my grades.
Strange thing of the month: my father found a laptop in the Micronews that had no price. He emailed the seller and found that the seller wanted to trade the laptop for SQL Server 2000 (1 processor), a database program worth about $500. The laptop is worth about $1500. This sounds like a questionable deal, no doubt, but apparantly it was legit, or so he thought. So, figuring he had nothing to lose, he went to the company store and bought SQL server, then made the trade for the laptop the same day.
You may be thinking it was all too good to be true. You would be wrong. This here laptop (and I'm looking at it) has never been opened. It's brand new, and all there. Of course the question is, what do we do with it? As you might remember, my dad already has a company laptop, so if we needed one for anything, that's available. I could really use a laptop, but I won't buy it for the same reason I don't have my own desktop - it's that or next quarter of school. So we face a tricky proposition: do we a) keep this white elephant b) sell it and make that easy 200% ROI or c) make some kind of interfamilial deal on this great asset gotten so cheaply?
NOTE: NO we are not selling it for less than $1500. Though I do have this free copy of WinXP Home...
I guess this is a problem most of you would like to have. I would too, except it's not my problem to solve! <g> I just think it's interesting.
Tonight: lawrence of arabia at the Cinerama with Cliff S. Hopefully good. Hopefully not going to ruin my exam grade tomorrow. *grits teeth*
