Always a DJ, never a dancer
Apr. 17th, 2004 11:15 pmSo we're just back from the wedding proper. What a day.
I say a day, because it was. We woke up around 9:30 or 10, and waited for the tuxes to arrive with Taylor and Brian. We all managed to get dressed in our tiny hotel room and left for the site.
It was raining pretty much all day, so instead of having the ceremony outdoors at the elementary school, they moved it to the reception hall for some "ceremony! turn around and... reception!" action. We were following taylor and his parents to the hall, and halfway there they just pulled over and stopped with no explanation. After waiting a while Josh went and asked, but they wouldn't say why they stopped. And I'm only writing this so I'll remember what a bizarre mystery that was.
Anyway once we got there there was a LOT of waiting around. Maybe less so for Cliff and Graham seeing as they had to be in all the photographs, but even still we were showing up around 1 for a 4:30 wedding. Taylor's dad was awesome and brought us Farmer Boy's burgers which were quite good and very large.
The ceremony started around 5ish, and was very good. I feel like I should write more about it than that, maybe describe how cool Taylor looked in his blinding white tux, how the juxtaposition of the sports-bar atmosphere of the reception hall and the high-class attire of the wedding party gave the ceremony something of a Baz Luhrmann's Romeo+Juliet feel, but I've not the time.
Then there was dinner, which was average but for the pizza. Can't say I've had pizza at a wedding before but it was a pretty good idea I guess.
The DJ they had was a friend of Taylor's that seemed much more comfortable beat-mixing disco classics than herding bridesmaids for traditional activities, and granted he made some missteps, but darnit I had so much fun dancing that it's hard to fault him too severely.
Taylor has some very nice cousins. That's all I'll say about that.
So overall I'm very proud of Taylor and Cassie Hammond and wish them many happy years together. I'd be plenty happy if my wedding goes off this well.
Thus ends the main event. My worries about the trip being worth the cost in money and time seem unfounded, which is very good, though I shall certainly wait and see what happens Monday.
Ew, Monday.
Tomorrow we're invited to gift-opening at Cassie's house, perhaps the last time we'll see Taylor for quite some time. I expect odd mixes of boring and bittersweet. After that we kind of have the day to ourselves until I head off to the airport around 8. It's funny, I didn't really want to leave once I got here, and now that I have to I really don't want to leave. And you know, ain't that always the way . This time even more so.
