Mount Eerie, The One AM Radio, Jon McIntyre and the Paper Airplanes will play an AS Pop Music sponsored rock show
...which I attended last night, and was blown away. Mr. McIntyre and the Paper Airplanes were just two emo kids with guitars, nothing to write about really, but the one am radio was very impressive. 4 members: 2 guitars, a violin/musical saw, stand-up bass, and a laptop. Obvious Dntel influence, but they took those musical moods and made them with real instruments and let the laptop just do the beats. It made for a wonderfully calming and lonely sound, like a movie you didn't want to end. In retrospect I maybe should've bought their new album instead of spending $30 on Microphones stuff, but the three albums I got were long-delayed purchases. These guys are new stuff. Of course, good luck finding this stuff online... Mount Eerie is the new name Phil Elvrum plays under, and unlike what I expected, he didn't bring his K records posse along for a night of building forts onstage and playing whatever comes to mind with his back to the audience. Instead he hooked up two amps and a Boomerang to his guitar and... played whatever he wanted while facing the audience. But really, watching Elvrum noodle around with songs he's writing is more fun than watching most bands play their most popular rock operas. Though he was downright poppy considering his album material. Most songs were little viginettes of fear, love, and the natural world, all expertly written but seemingly improvised, none of them I'd heard before. He had just gotten the Boomerang and seemed to have a little trouble with it, but it was fascinating to watch him work that in conjunction with the wacky reverb and heavy delay effects he's made his trademark sound. It stuns me that he makes such amazing sounds with such simple equipment. He still does whatever he wants onstage, playing his guitar sideways and vertically, looking confused at the audience like he's not sure why we're there. Instead of ending the show, he announced his last two songs, and during the last one he hit a lyric like "the sky said-", turned around, unplugged his guitar and ran offstage. House lights came up, muzak came on, show was over.
So yeah, if you get a chance to see Mount Eerie, take it. Even 60's-rock-fan Becky liked it, and that's the last thing I expected.

Uh, in my life's news, I'm going home this afternoon to do laundry and wish Lailey a happy birthday.
