It's heresey, but as an epic story I liked Nausicaä better than Lord of the Rings. Tolkien drags me down with his elaborate scene descriptions (one of the reasons the series translated so well to film), whereas Miyazaki's graphic novel format frees him from such tedium and enables him to focus his words on developing the plot.
Glad you liked it, next time I run across a fabulous series I'll send you a note; so far, most of the manga I'm reading is entertaining but doesn't really feed my brain.
