Yeah, that is heresy. Miyazaki was definitely trying for something of that scale though, with the maps and the great wars and the chosen one. I can easily see how one could displace the other in the reader's heart, especially since Tolkien really just wrote his books as an excuse to make languages rather than tell a ripping tale.
I'm not looking forward to watching the movie, though. :(
