Your nostrils actually switch off duties. During regular operation, you're really only breathing through one nostril anyway, but you don't notice it because airflow is not impeded in the idle nostril. When you have a cold/allergies, the active nostril is cleared so you can breathe, while the idle one gets stuffed.
